June 2024

Happy Summer!

If you're wondering where & how so much of 2024 has already gone, well, same.

How's the writing going, by the way?

If you winced, flinched, or cringed when you read that, you're in great company. That's how we all feel at some point during our book journeys. And the thing is, it can happen at many points on that long, windy road from concept to publication.

If you're struggling, I'm here to help. Whether you're stuck on your outline, unsure how to make all the pieces fit together into a narrative, wondering what the next step for your draft is, or grappling with a different aspect of bringing your narrative to life, I'm here for it.

Award-winning author shares how to make memoir

I recently had the deep pleasure and honor to talk with award-winning multi-genre author Ona Gritz, about her new memoir Everywhere I Look

It's a rich and beautiful book that chronicles the turbulent life of Ona's older sister Angie, who was first a victim of abuse and neglect and being pegged "the bad one", then the troubled teen/juvenile industry of the '60s and '70s, and then tragically murdered just when her life was looking up. It's part true crime, part family mystery, part grief memoir, and entirely great.

Ona talked candidly with me about the long process of writing, revising, and perfecting her memoir, how she chose the publication path that was right for her, and the challenges she faced along the way.

She shared her hard-gained insights on the importance of understanding your memoir's theme and core story, maintaining equilibrium while writing about emotionally and mentally difficult topics, and the dangers of revising as you write.

I'm overjoyed to share this conversation detailing how Ona Gritz brought Everywhere I Look into the world with y'all.

This month we are unpacking Hijab Butch Blues, a memoir-in-essays that won the 2024 Stonewall Book Award, and was included in multiple "best of" literary roundups. It's a frank and funny coming-of-age memoir about a queer young Muslim who finds the courage and strength to understand and embrace her identity, in the pages of the Koran.

The Memoir Writers' Book Club will be talking about Hijab Butch Blues on June 24th at 7:00pm Eastern.

'Til next time; keep writing, reading, and learning through both!

Warmly,

Write Your Way Real talk + resources for writers "I don't have time to read β€” much less do the exercises in β€” every writing craft book out there." Heard this refrain from many writers, and sang it more than a few times myself. Look, you don't always need craft books and exercises, but they can help. Reading and doing a good writing craft book expands your toolbox, moves you toward more confident writing, and gives you ways to surmount certain struggles. The right craft book at the right time...

Tip #3: Be clear, specific, but open-minded with what you are looking for when asking for feedback. Giving someone a piece of writing β€” a memoir excerpt, personal essay, chapter of your novel β€” and just saying β€œtell me what you think” is NOT the way to get valuable feedback from critique partners or a writers' group. To really maximize...
